Co-Worker Dating

Because the workplace consists of both men and women spending a great deal of time together, it is inevitable that soon or later some workers will find the “special someone” at work. Unfortunately, workplace romances can damage a company in the following ways: 1- Sexual Harassment: The end of a consensual relationship may be the beginning of a sexual harassment suit, usually by the employee holding the inferior position. 2- Workplace Violence: Some relationships end in violence, and relationships at work is no exception. 3- Allegations of Favoritism: When an employee dates the boss, other employee may make claim that the particular employee is receiving special favors. 4- Productivity: Dating on the job can produce a breeding ground for gossip which reduces productivity. Federal law and most states don’t address on-the-job dating, or do they expressly prohibit an employer from regulating on-the-job dating. Having a stated policy to guide the employees in their social relationship at work can prove beneficial if litigation ensues.
